On 1 February, Van Oord’s wind turbine installation vessel Aeolus started installing the first of 44 MHI Vestas Offshore Wind turbines, type V164-8.4 MW, at the Belgian offshore wind farm Norther.
The turbines are picked up four at a time from MHI Vestas’ pre-assembly site in the port of Flushing and are transported to the wind farm site, approximately 22 km off the coast of Zeebrugge. Here they are installed on the monopile foundations that have been installed previously. The wind farm is planned to become operational this summer. The 369.6 MW wind farm will then be able to provide around 400,000 households with green electricity annually.
Norther is the largest individual Belgian offshore wind farm now under construction. It is a project by Norther NV ((50% Boreas (a JV between Eneco & Diamond Generating Europe) – 50% Nethys).
