On February 26, Belgian offshore wind farm Norther produced its first power. Norther is located approximately 23 kilometres from the Belgian port of Zeebruges. It has a total capacity of 370 MW, produced by 44 MHI Vestas wind turbines, type V164-8.0 MW.
Once fully operational, planned for this summer, the wind farm is able to provide around 400,000 households with green electricity annually.
The concession was granted at the end of 2009. First offshore activities started mid-2018. As main contractor, Van Oord is responsible for the engineering, procurement, delivery and installation of the 45 foundations for the wind turbines, the offshore high-voltage station and the entire electrical infrastructure, as well as for installing the wind turbines themselves.
On 1 February, Van Oord started installing the first turbine. The company uses its installation vessel Aeolus.
Norther is a project by Belgian Elicio – a Belgian renewable energy producer operating internationally (50%), Dutch Eneco – a major producer and supplier of renewable electricity, natural gas and heat in the Netherlands and Belgium (25%) and also Diamond Generating Europe (25%).
