Energy park near Utrecht one step closer

The municipality of Utrecht has plans to facilitate the development of up to 11 wind turbines and 227 hectares of solar parks in the Rijnenburg and Reijerscop polders near Utrecht.

On april 3, the Municipal Executive of Utrecht presented a draft proposal for this energy park which could potentially provide 96,000 local households in the future. The initiators Rijne Energie, Eneco and BHM Solar will now explore the possibilities, together with the communities. The energy park will be located in the proximity of the residential areas De Meern, Nieuwegein and IJsselstein.

Balance between interests local community and renewable energy production
A basic principle in the draft concept is to achieve 50% local ownership. In addition, the municipality has included conditions to minimize the effects of noise and cast shadow, by opting for more silent wind turbine types and introduce a minimum distance of 800 m to the residential areas.

The municipal council will likely make a final decision before the end of the year. When the outcome is positive, construction could start in 2021. Source: Rijne Energie
