The N33 Wind Farm, to rise near Veendam, in the province of Groningen, gets the green light. In a judgement today, May 29, the Administrative Jurisdiction Division of the Council of State ruled the appeal against N33 Wind Farm to be unfounded.

A total of 20 appealants lodged an appeal against the integration (inpassingsplan) and the related decisions that make the realisation of the wind farm possible. Amongst the appealants are local residents and organisations like Platform Tegenwind N33 and Stichting Landschap Oldambt (Landscape Foundation Oldambt). According to the appealants, there is no support for the wind farm. They also blame the government of not having involved the local community at an early stage.

Currently, it is not defined in law that a decision can only be made when there is enough local support. It is up to the Government to trade off between the national interest of realising a sustainable energy supply and the interests of local residents. The Administrative Jurisdiction Division concluded that the plans for the wind farm comply to the requirements set by law.

The N33 will have a total power of almost 150 MW, to be produced by 35 wind turbines. This will be enough to provide green energy to the equivalent of around 140,000 households in the province of Groningen. The wind farm is an initiative of Windpark Vermeer B.V. and innogy Windpower Netherlands.

The first activities are likely to start this summer. The wind farm is expected to be completed in autumn 2020. Source: Raad van State
