Arrests made for crime offences related to wind farm construction in the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe

On Wednesday morning, June 19, the police arrested 3 men on the basis of their alleged involvement in sending threatening letters and asbestos dumping relating to the construction of wind farms in the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe.

Over the past few years, there were many incidents against land owners, companies and initiators involved in the to be built wind farms in the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe and against the related suppliers and service providers.

Several companies and directors received threatening letters to stop their involvement in the construction of the wind farms. Two of those actually did. At several locations asbestos was dumped, including at the railway station of Delfzijl.

Both acts are considered serious criminal offences. The police and the Public Prosecution Service launched an investigation to find and persecute the person(s) responsible for the crimes. As a result, three men, from Tweede Exloërmond, Meeden and Nieuw Buinen were arrested. The police also performed 6 house searches at several addresses in Meeden, Nieuw-Buinen, Groningen, Tweede Exloërmond, Oude Pekela and Stadskanaal.The police does not exclude that more arrests could be made.
