Shell and floating wind specialist CoensHexicon have signed a Joint Development Agreement to develop, build and operate a floating wind farm in South Korea. The wind farm will be located some 40 km off the city of Ulsan.
CoensHexicon is a joint venture between Swedish Hexicon AB and South Korean service provider Coens Co, set up to develop the emerging offshore wind market in South Korea, using Hexicon’s semi-submersible twin turbine foundation concept. In November 2018, Hexicon signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Busan Techno Park and Renewable Energy Center in Busan in South Korea. CoensHexicon has already received the grant from Korean Business and Energy Agency to investigate how multi-turbine platforms can be adapted to local conditions in Korea.
Henrik Baltscheffsky, CEO of Hexicon, on the partnership with Shell: “This is the start of our commercial journey in South Korea and similar places around the globe. We have formed a project company in Busan, TwinWind Development Co. Ltd., obtained an adequate water area offshore Ulsan City and are developing the first commercial floating wind farm. Our collaboration with Shell will contribute a wealth of skills and expertise when it comes to developing and operating a large floating wind farm. This includes serial manufacturing in South Korea of the patented multi-turbine foundation design developed by Hexicon in Sweden.”
The partnership was one of the 4 groups that signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the city of Ulsan in January of this year to build and maintain floating wind farms and to create a local supply chain in South Korea. Source: CoensHexicon
