Offshore contractor Heerema has been awarded a contract for Vineyard Wind, the first and largest commercial offshore wind farm in the United States.
Vineyard Wind is located 14 miles off the coast of Massachusetts, near the island of Martha’s Vineyard. It will comprise 84 wind turbines from MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, type V164-9.5 megawatt. The 800 MW offshore wind farm will generate clean energy for over 400,000 homes and businesses, while reducing carbon emissions by over 1.6 million tons per year. This is the equivalent of 6% of the State’s electricity use.
The contract includes the (offshore) transport and installation (T&I) of 84 foundations consisting of monopiles and transition pieces and appurtenant ESP platform. Construction at the wind farm will start next year. The different components will come from Europe and be transported to the offshore site for final construction. As reported earlier, the monopiles are manufactured by Sif Holding. The transition pieces will be produced by Spanish Windar Renovables SL. Image: Heerema
