Amsterdam has presented its draft Regional Energy Strategy (RES). In this plan, the municipality aims for 127 MW of wind energy by 2030.
The RES provides an inventory of where and how the city can implement the production of sustainable energy. It sets targets for 2030. The RES is one of the requirements in the Climate Agreement. The draft RES is a first step towards more sustainable energy.
In addition to wind energy, the city also wants to develop solar power; 400 MW on large rooftops and 150 MW on smaller roofs. The total production from these renewable energy sources will be sufficient to provide in 80% of the energy needs of the households in Amsterdam.
The municipality strives to have 50% of the energy production owned by local energy cooperatives of citizens and local companies.
Search areas
The municipality has identified 7 areas for possible development of wind energy. It will now investigate how many turbines can be installed in each of these areas. The selected areas are:
1. Port area (Havengebied)
2. Noorder IJplas & haven Noord
3. Ten Noorden Ring A10 Noord
4. Zeeburgereiland/IJburg/Sciencepark
5. Gaasperplas and Driemond
6. Amstel III and surroundings
7. Amsterdam Zuid
In-depth research into the spatial planning, construction and exploitation will be performed in cooperation with spatial experts, initiators and the local community.
In case these 7 search areas do not lead to the targeted energy capacity, the municipality will extend the search areas with the Noord / het IJmeer area. This can also be the case when the national targets are increased. According to the municipality, no research will be performed outside the identified areas.
The municipal council will discuss the draft RES on 11 March this year.
