The initiators of Fryslân Wind Farm, its main contractor consortium Zuiderzeewind (Siemens Gamesa, Van Oord), Visser & Smit Hanab, TenneT and Rijkswaterstaat Noord Nederland (Department of Waterways and Public Works) are supporting an initiative to create a Honey Highway along the A7 highway.

The Honey Highway is an initiative by Deborah Post from Schipluiden to create a permanent living environment for bees by means of sowing native wild flowers in shoulders alongside national and provincial highways, railways and dikes. Currently, native wild bees and honey bees are reducing in large numbers due to lack of natural habitats.

On 21 March, the first day of spring, a start will be made along the A7 highway where the cables for the Fryslân wind farm are installed. In total, around 35,000 m2 of perennial wild flowerseeds will be sowed. The seeds come from nature and harvesting areas in the Netherlands. There are between 40 and 50 different seeds, each selected for unique soil conditions. Rijkswaterstaat Noord Nederland already has previous experience with the Honey Highway project and will maintain the flowerd fields.

Currently construction is also ungoing on a nature island near the future wind farm that will function as a work island during construction.
