TenneT Holding B.V. and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have signed a EUR 250 million loan agreement for the financing of the western section of TenneT’s 48 km ‘Zuidwest 380 kV’ project.

The new high voltage connection should enable the integration of the electricity generated by the 1.4 GW Borssele offshore wind project in het Dutch grid and is at the same time an important link in the connection with Belgium.

The EIB financing will support the construction of a new 380 kV transmission line – combined with a 150 kV line for part of the route – from the substation at Borssele to a new substation at Rilland. This brings the total lending by EIB to TenneT to EUR 1.8 billion. Previously the EIB provided loans for the upgrading and expansion of TenneT’s electricity transmission networks in the Netherlands and Germany as well as interconnectors.

The construction of the 48 km connection is to start after the summer. Commissioning is expected in 2022.

Wintrack masts
The new high voltage connection will see wintrack masts. A wintrack consists of two pylons with high voltage cables hung between them. The route is split up in two work areas; west of Willem-Annapolder (between the Borssele station and Willem-Annapolder) and east of it (between Willem- Annapolder and the Rilland station).

TenneT awarded VDL Network Supplies the contract for the production, supply and installation of 104 wintrack masts for the eastern track. The first activities are planned for the end of 2020. TenneT expects to award the supply of the masts for the other section of the connection in April.
