Van Oord is ready to start with the installation of 72 foundations at Vattenfall’s 600 MW Danish Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. The company is using their heavy lift installation vessel Svanen.
The 8,000-tonne heavy lift vessel Svanen has arrived at the wind farm, located some 15 to 40 km off the Danish coast, Van Oord said. It will install the 72 monpiles and transition pieces that will carry the 72 Siemens Gamesa 8.4 MW wind turbines.
The monopiles, of up to 800 tonnes, are produced by EEW Special Pipe Constructions in Rostock, Germany, and will be transported floating to the offshore site. The transition pieces are produced by Bladt Industries in Aalborg, Denmark, and will be transported on barges. Van Oord will use a noise mitigation system to reduce the underwater noise resulting from offshore pile driving. In April, Van Oord’s subsea rock installation vessel Bravenes started the installation of the seabed protection.
Van Oord was awarded the contract for the transport and installation of the foundations for the 600 MW Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm in December 2018. The Baltic Sea is no new area for the Svanen, having previously worked also on the Anholt, Baltic 2 and Arkona projects.
The installation is planned to be completed in 2020. Installation of the 8 MW turbines will then start in early 2021 Vattenfall recently said. Kriegers Flak is scheduled to be fully operational in 2021 and will be the largest Danish offshore wind farm.
