EWT receives 25-year type certificate for its DW61-1MW turbine

EWT, the Dutch manufacturer of direct drive wind turbines for localised energy generation, received 25-year type certificate for its DW61-1MW turbine from certification body UL.

The 25-year type certificate was issued in April and is said to be the world’s first for a sub-MW wind turbine. The certificate applies to EWT’s DW61-1MW turbine and covers products released from 2020.

The DW61-1MW has rotor diameter of 60,9 m and is best suitable for low-wind (class IIIA – up to 7.5 m/s average at hub height) sites. To issue the type certificate, UL assessed the turbine’s ability to handle the additional loads from the extended operational life as well as ageing, wear and potential faults from longer operations.

EWT said the 25-year life certificate could reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of wind projects by up to 8% and that longer certified lifetimes could boost investor confidence in longer financial models and prompt developers to seek longer leases.

EWT plans to obtain similar length certification for other models.
