Final cables for first section Fryslân Wind Farm export cable route installed

Visser & Smit Hanab installed the last sections of the export cable route between the transformer station at Breezanddijk and Bolsward for the 382.7 MW Fryslân Wind Farm. From here, TenneT is responsible for the last section of the route to the high-voltage station in Oudehaske.

Fryslân Wind Farm will rise south of the Afsluitdijk in the IJsselmeer lake and will comprise of 89 Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy wind turbines with each a power of 4.3 MW. The power from all the future wind turbines will be collected at the transformer station in Breezanddijk. From here a 55 km export cable route will transport the power to TenneT’s high-voltage station in Oudehaske from where it can be fed into the national grid.

The Zuiderzeewind consortium of Van Oord and Siemens Gamesa is the main contractor for the construction of the wind farm and is responsible for the first section of the export cable route to Bolsward. Here, power cables had to be installed underneath the bike path at the Afsluitdijk and in the verge of the A7 highway towards Bolsward.

The consortium has subcontracted the work to Visser & Smit Hanab. Fryslân Wind Farm reported that where possible the cables were installed in the standard way; digging a trench and burrying the cable. In case of large waterways, locks or on and off ramps the cables were laid with a so-called horizontally controlled bore.

With a horizontal directional drilling, a long borehole is made through the ground using a computer system and GPS. Bentonite is then pumped into the borehole to ensure that the borehole remains open. Then a pipe is pulled through it which will house the cables. The pipes have a diameter of up to 63 centimeters and a length of more than one kilometer. Multiple cranes are required to keep a pipe in the air in a given angle.

In the next weeks the finishing touches will be completed on the cables and the traffic measures will be removed.

Wind farm construction timeline
At the moment there are several different activities taking placing for the wind farm. Onshore, the transformer station is taking shape. Offshore, activities continue on the artificial work/nature island.

The foundations are planned to be installed between September this year and January 2021. Between December 2020 and February 2021 the inter-array cables will be installed. Turbine installation work is expected to start in March and complete in the summer of 2021.
