Last week Van Oord installed the last of 72 foundations in the Danish Kriegers Flak Offshore Wind farm. The Dutch company used its heavy lift vessel Svanen for the job which it said was completed ahead of schedule.
Van Oord was awarded the transport and installation contract for the offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea by Vattenfall, the developer of the Danish wind farm, in december 2018. The installation work started in May 2020.
The foundations, consisting of transition pieces and monopiles, were manufactured in Denmark and Germany respectively. The monopiles were transported floating from EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH in Rostock, Germany, directly to the offshore site. The transition pieces were transported on barges from Bladt Industries in Aalborg, Denmark.
Van Oord’s fleet for this project consisted of 10 vessels, in order to carry out all works. To reduce the underwater noise a ‘double big bubble curtain’ was used during pile driving. The project team worked closely with Vattenfall and foundation suppliers EEW Group and Bladt Industries to deliver this project.
Kriegers Flak Offshore Wind farm
With a production capacity of just over 600 MW, Kriegers Flak, located between 15 and 40 km off the Danish coast, will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm. The project comprises 72 Siemens Gamesa 8.4 MW wind turbines. The construction activities offshore started in May 2019. Kriegers Flak is scheduled to become fully operational by the end of 2021.
