On Monday, 13 October 2020, the heavy load carrier Fjord arrived at the Maasvlakte, carrying the first of five foundations for the Kincardine floating offshore wind project off the coast of Aberdeen in Scotland.
At the Maasvlakte a MHI Vestas V164-9.5 MW wind turbine will be mounted on the foundations before being towed to their final destination, approximately 15 km off the Aberdeen coast.
The foundations for the 5 wind turbines are designed by Principle Power and manufactured by Navantia and Windar in Spain. Boskalis is responsible for the transportation of the foundations to the Netherlands, using its semi-submersible heavy load carrier ‘Fjord’. Boskalis is also responsible for the transportation and installation of the turbines. In addition to the ‘Fjord’, the company also deploys its heavy anchor handling tug (AHT) BOKA Falcon, for the installation of the anchors and chains on the seabed, and three more AHTs.
The Kincardine floating offshore wind farm is a project by Kincardine Offshore Windfarm Limited (KOWL). Spanish Cobra Wind, a subsidiary of ACS Group, is responsible for the engineering, design, supply, construction, and commissioning of the floating wind farm. In addition to the five 9.5 MW turbines, the project also includes a V80-2.0 MW turbine. The latter was installed in 2018. This brings the total power for the wind farm at almost 50 MW.
