Attention card for safe action in wind turbine related incidents

In the next decade, many more wind turbines will be installed onshore. An attention card has been created to provide guidelines for emergency services on how to act safely and effectively in a wind turbine related incident.

The attention card was created by the Instituut Fysieke Veiligheid (IFV), an institute that contributes to emergency workers and drivers being able to do their work in a professional and safe manner, together with experts from the Dutch Wind Energy Association (NWEA) and experts from various safety regions.

The attention card is an aid for the commander, and possibly duty officer, during the call-out to an incident involving a wind turbine. “In the event of such an incident, it is essential that the emergency services coordinate with the operator of the wind turbine and the height rescue team of the fire brigade. This is due to the unique character of a wind turbine and the specialist nature of fire fighting and emergency services at height. This kind of important information can be found on the attention card, “says Nils Rosmuller, Energy and Transport Safety lecturer.

The attention card briefly addresses the risks of wind turbines, the characteristics of incidents involving wind turbines and four scenarios of incidents involving wind turbines. The attention card can be dowloaded here (Dutch only)
