2020 shows record year in added wind capacity in the Netherlands

2020 saw a record in added wind energy capacity in the Netherlands, according to Windstats. In 2020, 2,261 MW was added, almost seven times as many as the year before. The 2020 target for onshore wind, set in the 2013 Energy Agreement, has however not been achieved.

As of 1 January 2021, there are 2,610 wind turbines installed on land and at sea with a total capacity of 6,719 megawatts (MW). Wind energy currently supplies nearly 10% of Dutch electricity consumption.

The onshore capacity increased by 777 MW. The largest part of this increase can be attributed to the wind projects that were established with a government integration plan: Prinses Ariane (formerly Wieringermeer, 295 MW), N33 (147 MW) and part of De Drentse Monden en Oostermoer (under construction). The onshore wind turbines now together account for an annual production of approximately 11 TWh of sustainable electricity.

Offshore, the construction of Borssele I to IV added 1,483.5 MW, bringing the total installed offshore wind capacity to 2,441 MW, according to Windstats.

More power with fewer turbines
The size of new wind turbines increased. Windstats reports that in 2000, an average wind turbine had a tip height of about 75 meters. In 2020 this was around 200 meters. With the significantly increased height, a modern wind turbine produces almost ten times more power than it was about 20 years ago.

2020 target not achieved
The target of 6,000 MW onshore wind capacity by 2020, set in the Energy Agreement from 2013, was however not reached. At the end of 2020 4,278 MW was realised. None of the individual provinces has achieved its original target for 2020. However, it is expected that another 1,500 MW of wind power will be commissioned in 2021, divided over all provinces.

For offshore the target is set at a minimum of 4,500 MW by 2023. With 2,442 MW installed, the Netherlands will have to add another 2,058 MW. In the coming years, Hollandse Kust (zuid) I to IV (1,400 MW) will be built.

Take over by Flynth
Windstats is a product of renewable consultancy firm Bosch & van Rijn. The company announced at the end of last week that of 1 January, it has been taken over by Flynth consultants and accountants. Through the merger, the companies want to offer a broader package of knowledge and services and promote the energy transition in collaboration with governments, developers and cooperatives.

Flynth is a consultant and accountant for small and medium-sized businesses with cooperative roots. The company has over 1,600 employees and 50 offices in the Netherlands. With the acquisition of Flynth, it is fulfilling its ambitions in the field of sustainability.

The 3 current owners will proceed their career elsewhere. The new management consists of Joost Overbeek as general director and Saskia Moolhuijzen as commercial director. Ruud van Rijn of Bosch & van Rijn will remain involved with the company for another six months to ensure the transfer of customers and the team.
