VolkerWind, a partnership of VolkerWessels companies Van Hattum en Blankevoort, Visser & Smit Hanab and KWS, will start this month with the first foundation construction activities for the Den Tol Wind Farm in the outskirts of Netterden, near the German border at Emmerich. The wind farm is planned to supply its first electricity in the spring of 2022.

Den Tol Wind Farm is an initiative of a number of agricultural families who wanted to make the region more sustainable. The idea originated in 2001 and now, 20 years later, the wind farm can be built. The wind farm is developed with the support of Windunie Development.

VolkerWind is building the foundations on behalf of Windunie. The foundations will support the 9 Nordex, type N117 wind turbines with a tip height of 189 m and a 3.6 MW power. This brings the total installed capacity of the wind farm at almost 33 MW.

Fundex piles

Van Hattum en Blankevoort will carry out the foundation construction activities on behalf of VolkerWind. The shape of the foundation used is different from standard foundation: a higher discharge ensures that, within the permit requirements, a higher tip height is achieved.

In addition, due to the wind farm being constructed near a Natura 2000 area, VolkerWind is adapting its implementation method by using low-vibration and low-noise fundex piles. This enables the company to build the foundations during the breeding season, when pile driving is not allowed.

Meiland Azewijn is involved as contractor for the construction of the park roads and crane hardstands while Watt Infra will take care of the park cabling. VolkerWind will coordinate between the parties. Green Trust Consultancy takes care of the construction management.

The turbine installation activities are planned to start in in September of this year. The wind farm is expected to supply the first energy in the spring of 2022. Together they will supply more than 80,000 MWh of electricity annually, the equivalent of the energy consumption of over 25,000 households. Residents of Netterden can participate in the wind farm with a bond loan.
