New technical challenges sought for OWIC 2021 edition

Following the finals of the 2020 edition of the Offshore Wind Innovation Challenge (OWIC) earlier this month, the organisers are now calling on leading offshore wind companies and organisations to bring forward new technical challenges they seek innovative solutions for. The challenges for the 2021 edition of OWIC can be submitted before 6 April.

To realise one of the largest infrastructural developments in Dutch history, the offshore wind industry must make offshore wind even more affordable, reliable and sustainable. Advancing technical innovation and implementing it into the offshore wind market will give offshore wind a better position in the energy system, both in the Netherlands and on an international level.

Although the Netherlands are known for their strong innovation skills and knowledge and experience in the wind and offshore industry, we are lacking our own innovation challenge. That’s why Offshore Wind Innovators took the initiative to launch OWIC. The 2021 edition will be the fifth since its launch.

Accelerating innovative solutions to technical challenges

The objective of the cooperation is to connect leading companies and organisations that are looking for out-of-the-box solutions for the technical challenges they face during their offshore wind related activities with innovators that can present and the solution the industry is looking for.

For the companies and organisations, the Challenge offers them a way to find fast-forward solutions to current challenges and accelerate innovation in their company. Previous challenge providers were Van Oord, TKI Wind op Zee, SeaZip, De Rijke Noordzee, Deutsche Windtechnik and Gemini. For SME’s, R&D organisations, and start-ups in Europe, the Challenge brings the opportunity to come up with innovative solutions for these challenges.

OWIC facilitates opportunities, new partnerships, expert assistance, and increases publicity for all involved stakeholders. By supporting mutual networking and offering access to those networks, lots of publicity opportunities arise to innovative ideas and companies. The result is that the challenges are widely known in the offshore wind industry.

Previous editions of OWIC

With a track record of challenges such as finding long-life CTV fenders, optimize bubble curtains to Reduce Noise Emission and Efficient Biodiversity Monitoring, the success of Offshore Wind Innovation Challenge has become an annual process for the Dutch offshore wind industry.

Multiple solutions have been implemented since the start of the challenge. In 2019 an ingenious bubble curtain to damp piling sound and artificial reefs were solutions that helped the leading companies. In 2020, solutions for fully biodegradable reef structures and efficient underwater monitoring were presented.
