Zeewolde Wind Farm substation ready

The substation for Zeewolde Wind Farm is ready. The station will soon convert the 33 kV power generated by the wind farm’s wind turbines to 150 kV for transport to TenneT’s high-voltage network. It concerns a private network to which other wind farms and solar parks can also be connected in the future.

Zeewolde wind farm is currently being built on the edge of Zeewolde, near the IJsselmeer, in an area of ​​over 300 square kilometers. The wind farm will comprise 91 wind turbines in total. Eight wind turbines are managed by Pure Energie and Eneco. The other 83 wind turbines are being developed by Windpark Zeewolde B.V., a unique collaboration of more than 200 local farmers, residents and entrepreneurs. These 83 wind turbines replace the approximately 220 distributed turbines. Vestas supplies turbine variants of the 2 MW and 4 MW platforms. With 320 MW, these 83 turbines together generate nearly three times more energy than the old turbines.

Private network

The transformer station will collect the power generated by the wind turbines. Two 240 MVA transformers of nearly 200 tons each convert the 33 kV voltage from the wind turbines to 150 kV. The investment of the transformer station was several tens of millions of euros. The network has an exemption from the Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) and is a Closed Distribution System.

It concerns a private station. Managing Director of Zeewolde Wind Farm Sjoerd Sieburgh Sjoerdsma: “The transformer station on Vogelweg is one of the largest private networks in the Netherlands to which we connect our own wind farm and to which other wind farms and solar parks can also be connected. Of course we would have preferred to be connected to a public network, because being a grid operator for the next 25 years is not our core business. The size made it however necessary to build our own high-voltage network.”

First power expected soon

The entire project is expected to be completed in the autumn of 2022. Construction of the foundations started at the beginning of this year. The transports of the large components for the wind turbines have started recently. The first tower section was placed on 3 May. The first wind turbines are expected to be connected to the substation and supplying the first power in the coming months.
