A team of researchers recently went to Blauwwind’s Borssele III & IV offshore wind farm to monitor the 2,400 outsourced flat oysters that were placed here at the base of four wind turbines in October 2020. The results turned out to be promising.
Researchers from Eurofins AquaSense and The Rich North Sea are conducting extensive research into how many oysters have survived the winter, what the growth is and whether larvae can already be found. Ecologist Renate Olie is enthusiastic: “The baskets are full of life now and survival of the oysters is high, so that’s good news”.
Each one of the oyster tables was lifted from the base of the wind turbine with the help of an underwater robot and placed on the research vessel. For biodiversity research, photo and video footage was obtained and water samples were taken for DNA analysis. Currently, samples are investigated and data will be analysed for processing in a scientific report.
This is the first time that the base of wind turbines has been used for installation of oyster tables. In order to increase the chance of reproduction and the development of an oyster reef in this area, a layer of shells was also dumped around the eight wind turbines examined. This offers attachment possibilities for the oyster larvae. The next monitoring campaign is planned in two years’ time. Source: The Rich North Sea
