SSE Renewables chooses Den Helder as Hollandse Kust West O&M base

SSE Renewables, a British company, intends to invest millions of dollars in Den Helder and the surrounding area over the next few years. The offshore wind farm developer and builder wants Den Helder to be its hub for doing business in the Netherlands.

SSE Renewables intends to invest in an innovative hydrogen project, as well as collaboration projects with local educational institutions, as well as establish an operational center in the Port of Den Helder for wind farm construction and maintenance.

SSE Renewables is the market leader in offshore wind energy. In the British North Sea, SSE Renewables is currently constructing the world’s largest offshore wind farm, the 3.6 GW Dogger Bank Wind Farm. Furthermore, the company is currently bidding on the wind farms in Hollandse Kust (west). As part of that tender, SSE Renewables is collaborating with Microsoft and Avanade, among others, on the world’s largest digital research project into the impact of wind farms on the surrounding ecosystem off the Dutch coast.

Hydrogen-powered wind farm ships

If SSE Renewables is awarded the contract, it will be headquartered in Den Helder. SSE Renewables has taken over a commercial space in the former fish auction building. The company wants hydrogen-powered ships to keep the wind farm running. SSE Renewables intends to produce green hydrogen in the port of Den Helder to ensure a consistent supply of green hydrogen. The company intends to use the remaining hydrogen in Den Helder for local projects. As a result, a local hydrogen hub with plenty of room for growth can be established.

Dutch expand wind farms numbers

Because of the Dutch government’s increased ambitions, the number of offshore wind farms will be significantly increased in the coming decades. Recruiting suitable personnel to keep up with the sector’s growth will be a challenge. SSE Renewables also intends to begin actively working with educational institutions in the Den Helder region beginning next year, in part as a result of this. The company hopes to contribute to the development of practice-oriented educational materials, provide internships, and ultimately provide students with a good job in this field.
