Castor Marine connects fourth Wagenborg walk-to-work vessel

Wagenborg Offshore’s fourth Walk-to-Work (W2W) vessel, Koenigsborg, has been outfitted by Castor Marine.

When working on offshore assets, the VSAT internet and Tampnet 4G connectivity solution provide the crew with continuous communications channels, real-time reporting options to onshore teams, and leisure use during downtime. Long-term maintenance was also contracted to Castor Marine.

PSV to W2W

Wagenborg Offshore, a subsidiary of Royal Wagenborg, had three Walk-to-Work ships in its fleet when it decided to add a fourth last year. In just six months, the company converted a PSV at the Royal Niestern Sander shipyard in the Netherlands. The ship would have to be able to perform multiple offshore support roles and have enough extra space to accommodate 40 people.

The Koenigsborg is being used in a variety of ways now that Wagenborg has taken it into service in April. It is, first and foremost, a W2W accommodation vessel for platform maintenance. Second, it is a Support and Standby Vessel (SSV). Finally, it has been certified as an Emergency Response & Rescue Vessel (ERRV), allowing it to expand its operations to include rescue work, emergency towing, and patrol duties.

Offshore connectivity

Crews and additional maintenance or rescue staff need seamless internet connectivity for smooth operations and exchanging information with clients, suppliers, and HQ – especially in emergency situations – for oil, gas, and offshore wind companies to carry out their work safely and cost-effectively.

Castor Marine, a satellite service provider, upgraded Koenigborg’s communications systems to meet the demands imposed by offshore operations’ remoteness and extreme weather conditions. For those monitoring or repairing components on offshore platforms and reporting back to shore teams, a reliable and always-on connectivity system is critical.

Intellian was chosen as the preferred satellite communication technology onboard by Castor Marine. The solution includes a VSAT internet connectivity system as well as an Iridium Certus L-band back-up system. A dual Intellian v100NX system is included, as well as an Intellian C700 Iridium Certus terminal and an Intellian t100W satellite TV system. To achieve faster upload speeds, the v100NX antennas are equipped with a high-power 25W Ku-band BUC.
