ABB to power Van Oord’s wind turbine installation vessel Boreas

ABB has signed a deal with Yantai CIMC Raffles Shipyard in China to deliver power, automation, and propulsion systems for Van Oord’s wind turbine installation vessel Boreas.

Four Azipod propulsion units from ABB will have a total propulsion output of 16 MW. Furthermore, the company’s hybrid-electric propulsion technology will support the addition of new energy sources as they become accessible. ABB’s energy storage system will serve as a backup power supply while reducing engine running hours to reduce wear and fuel consumption thanks to its spinning-reserve and peak-load-shaving capabilities.

Boreas, which is currently being built, will be able to run on methanol and install 25 MW worth of wind turbines. The jack-up will be specifically designed for the transportation and installation of wind turbine foundations. The ship will have a crane from the Dutch business Huisman that can lift more than 3,000 tonnes.

It’s anticipated that the gigantic jack-up, which will have a very small carbon impact, will hit the market in 2024.
