With their first mobile airborne wind system (AWES), the Delft startup Kitepower has raised over € 1 million through crowdfunding. This amount will be used to go to market with the system.
The successful pan-European crowdfunding campaign, launched by Kitepower CEO Johannes Peschel, ended on October 4, 2022. The campaign ended with 856 investors and over €1 million invested, well over the € 700,000 targeted.
With the money, Kitepower aims to provide short-term solutions for disaster areas, refugee camps, construction sites and festivals.
“Over the past two decades, the installed capacity of wind turbines worldwide has grown by 14% per year. The lifespan of these wind turbines is 30-40 years, which means that the majority will have to be replaced around 2050. The goal is to do that with a greener alternative. Our system consists of 90-95% less material than comparable wind turbines, the service life is longer and repairs are cheaper. This results in significantly less CO2 emissions per kW gained,” says Johannes Peschel, Founder & CEO of Kitepower.
Although diesel generators still rule the market at the present, Kitepower’s movable containers offer a good and environmentally friendly option. For the past five years, Kitepower has closely partnered with the Ministry of Defense to strategically place the power units in hostile and difficult-to-reach locations. Image source: Kitepower
