Heerema’s Balder vessel installs first wind turbine jacket foundations at Neart na Gaoithe

The Balder vessel from Heerema Marine Contractors has put in the first wind turbine jacket foundations at the Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) offshore wind farm off the East coast of Scotland.

The first steel wind turbine jacket was brought into position after the first 10 steel jackets arrived on site by Saipem’s subcontractor Heerema, who then lowered it onto already-built piles on the seabed.

Heerema said on social media that this initiative is unique because all of its vessels have now worked in offshore wind.

With a capacity of about 450 megawatts (MW) of low carbon energy, NnG, which is jointly owned by EDF Renewables and ESB, will have enough low carbon electricity to power about 375,000 homes and will annually offset more than 400,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The wind farm will be finished in 2024 after the first turbines go into service in the middle of 2023.
