Van Oord (via Van Oord Offshore Wind UK Limited) contracted EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH (EEW SPC) to manufacture 100 monopile foundations for RWE’s Sofia Offshore Wind Farm off the Brittish coast.
EEW SPC wil manufacture the monopiles in Rostock. The monopiles will have a diameter of up to 8.8 metres with a length of up to 91.8 metres, for which EEW SPC will process approximately 130,000 tonnes of steel. Production at the Rostock site is scheduled to begin in June 2023.
“After several successful projects for Van Oord such as Gemini, Deutsche Bucht and Fryslân, we are pleased to have again been selected as supplier for this excellent European project.”

Sofia Offshore Wind Farm
Sofia Offshore Wind Farm is being built on Dogger Bank in the central North Sea, approximately 195 kilometres from the UK’s north east coast and is 100% owned by energy company RWE. With an installed capacity of 1.4 GW, it will be one of the largest single offshore wind farms in the world. The wind farm will comprise one hundred Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s SG 14-222 DD 14 MW turbines.
After commissioning, Sofia will generate enough green energy to supply the electricity needs of the equivalent of up to 1.2 million UK households.
