Huisman’s 2,200mt Leg Encircling Crane is on its way to the Keppel AmFELS shipyard in Brownsville, Texas, USA. Here it will be fitted on the wind turbine installation vessel Charybdis which will be the first Jones Act compliant installation vessel in the USA.
The crane is being transported by BigLift Shipping‘s heavy transport vessel Happy Star. Once arrived in Brownsville, the crane will be commissioned and tested by the Huisman North America team on location.
The vessel Charybdis is currently under construction for Blue Ocean Energy Marine, LLC, a Dominion Energy company. Huisman received the order for the delivery of the crane back in September 2020. The crane will enable the vessel to be fit-for-purpose for the installation of large-scale offshore wind developments in the U.S.
With several gigawatts of offshore wind capacity to be installed along the East Coast in the next decade, access to Jones Act compliant offshore wind turbine installation vessels is of strategic importance to the American offshore wind market. Source: Huisman
