TenneT awards €23B for eleven 2 GW Dutch and German grid connections in North Sea

In order to implement eleven 2 GW grid connections in the North Sea that will link German and Dutch offshore wind farms to their respective grids on land, TenneT has inked multiyear agreements with three consortia.

The eleven orders’ combined value is almost 23 billion euros.

With 40 gigawatts, TenneT will provide over two-thirds of the 65 GW offshore wind energy target by 2030 set by Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium in the Esbjerg Declaration made in May 2022 at the North Sea Energy Summit.

Hitachi and Petrofac, GE and Sembcorp Marine (SMOP), and GE and McDermott will develop offshore platforms, onshore substations, and HVDC systems until 2031 to connect eight Dutch and three German offshore wind farms. Future additional HVDC stations are planned to be called off at a later stage.

Projects

Five Dutch projects, including IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1 in Borssele, Doordewind 1 and Doordewind 2 in Eemshaven, and Geertruidenberg or Moerdijk, have been granted to Hitachi Energy/Petrofac (Nederwiek 3). This collaboration will also make it possible for Rastede to connect to the German connection LanWin5.

Three Dutch projects will be connected in Maasvlakte, Rotterdam, thanks to GE/award. SMOP’s (IJmuiden Ver Beta, IJmuiden Ver Gamma and Nederwiek 2).

BalWin4 and LanWin1, two German projects that will be connected in Unterweser, will be carried out by GE/McDermott. TenneT anticipates that contracts will shortly be awarded for the projects BalWin3, LanWin4, and LanWin2 (all of which connect to the onshore grid in Wilhemshaven). To guarantee that all projects can be completed by 2031, the awarded suppliers will begin the necessary preparation work as soon as possible.

2GW Program

The 2GW Program accelerates European energy transformation. Europe will get more green energy safely, cheaply, and with no environmental impact. The 2GW program includes a new cable infrastructure and standard platform. It will help Europe become the first climate-neutral continent and progress the offshore energy revolution.
