KENC Engineering, a leading Dutch offshore engineering company, has been awarded a contract to design and build a Flange Mounted Upending Tool (FMUT) for an international marine contractor.
The FMUT will be deployed on a jack-up vessel to assist with the upending, down ending, and lifting of monopiles of varying weights and dimensions for upcoming offshore wind farm projects.
The FMUT, which can handle monopile diameters of 7.5 to 8 meters and has a Safe Working Load (SWL) of 1600 tons, will be delivered with a sea fastening cradle in December 2023. The tool will be used for the first time at a UK offshore wind farm project, where it will help speed up the installation process and reduce operational costs.
Attachment and detachment
KENC Engineering’s FMUT design is highly versatile and can be used for a range of monopile sizes and weights, making it a valuable tool for the rapidly growing offshore wind industry. The tool’s flange-mounted design allows for quick and efficient attachment and detachment from the monopile, and its robust construction ensures safe and reliable operations.
Impact on offshore wind
The deployment of KENC Engineering’s FMUT is expected to have a significant impact on the offshore wind industry. The tool’s versatile design will allow for quicker and more efficient installation of monopiles, reducing the time and cost required to install offshore wind turbines. This will enable the industry to continue its rapid expansion and contribute to the global transition to renewable energy sources.
