For the first time in Belgium, an almost fully circular wind turbine is being installed. Dutch company Business in Wind is involved in this project.
Belgian property developer and real estate investor Groep Bolckmans is placing a refurbished wind turbine on the business estate of Roofoods in Maasmechelen as part of its sustainability programme. Except for the concrete foundation, all wind turbine components are second hand. The project is called Re-Wind, which stands for RE-furbished WIND turbine.
Business in Wind has been contracted to supply and install the wind turbine. The company is responsible for the full scope, from the purchase to the final installation.
The wind turbine concerned is a Vestas V90 2MW which has been operational for around 15 years in Gols in Austria as part of a wind farm. The turbine will be dismantled and transported from Austria to Barneveld in the Netherlands by long standing partner G Vlastuin where it will be refurbished for its second life by the company Rengineers which is also responsible for the O&M agreement for the coming 20 years. This allows for the turbine to continue to operate for 25 more years.
The tower is also coming from an existing wind turbine. This turbine currently stands along the Hartelkanaal in the province of Zuid-Holland and will soon be dismantled. The tower will then be brought to its final destination. The tower concerned is taller than the one for the original wind turbine but fortunately, the permit allowed for this.
Preparatory works have started yesterday in Maasmechelen. When completed, expected for April 2024, the turbine will have a hub height of 105m and a tip height of 150m.
