Sif starts production for Empire Wind 1 Offshore Wind Farm

Sif has announced that it has started with the production for Equinor’s Empire Wind Offshore Wind Farm in the US.

Sif is manufacturing and supplying 54 monopiles and transition pieces for the 810 MW wind farm, located 15-30 miles southeast of Long Island.

The first transition piece is currently being made in Roermond. The first steel plates have been delivered to Sif’s new Maasvlakte 2 site where production is expected to start in July.

Empire Wind

Empire Wind 1 is part of the Empire Wind area which spans 80,000 acres, with water depths of between approximately 75 and 135 feet. The project’s two phases, Empire Wind 1 and 2, have a potential capacity of more than 2 GW (810 + 1,260 MW).

Equinor had been selected as a conditional winner in New York’s fourth offshore wind solicitation earlier this year. At the start of June, the company signed an offtake agreement with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

Onshore construction activity is already under way at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. Empire Wind 1 will be America’s first offshore wind project to plug directly into the New York City grid with a target to deliver first power in late 2026. Source: Sif
