Today the construction of Batterij Park Zeewolde, a 65 MWh energy storage system next to the transformer station of Wind Farm Zeewolde in the Dutch province of Flevoland, has officially started. The battery park is part of a larger plan for a sustainable energy park, and is expected to be completed in fall 2025.
The ceremonial start of construction was performed by Sjoerd Sieburgh Sjoerdsma (director of Windpark Zeewolde), Jan Veenink and Co’nn Rennen (board of Windpark Zeewolde) together with Steven Scheffer (alderman of the municipality of Zeewolde) and Harold Hofstra (member of the Provincial Executive of Flevoland).
The battery park, covering 2,000 m2, will store or release energy when needed, and as such help combat grid congestion and help balance the grid.
Rolls-Royce Power Systems is realizing the project and supplying the large-scale battery storage system, involving 16 battery containers. In addition, there will be inverters and transformers.
Green energy park
The battery park is part of a larger plan for a green energy park. A second battery park, in an area of 2,400 m2, is planned next to the transformer station. This project belongs to a developer. The project has also been granted final permits, but is not yet as far along in development as Battery Park Zeewolde, Windpark Zeewolde reported in June this year.
There is also a plan for a 15 MW hydrogen plant where incoming power from Wind Farm Zeewolde’s wind turbines will be converted into green hydrogen. This plant will be on a 12,000 m2 site. The permit for this plan was submitted in June this year. Construction is expected to start in 2026. The intention is to build a second hydrogen plant after that, with a capacity of 75MW.
