ADLS tested on Windplan Groen wind turbines

Windplan Groen, a large onshore wind energy project in the Dutch province of Flevoland, has initiated a test with an Aircraft Detection Lighting System (ADLS) on the turbines in the wind farm. The system will allow the red aviation lighting on the turbines to be off as much as possible.

The test is a response to reactions from the surrounding area. By law, wind turbines with a tip height of more than 150 meters must have aviation lighting, consisting of a lamp at the top of the turbine that emits white light during the day and red light during the night. Thanks to the ADLS, the red lighting will no longer have to be on continuously in the evening and at night. Only on approaching low-flying traffic, such as small aircraft and helicopters, will the red lights be switched on. During the day, the white lights will remain switched on.

The system’s equipment has been installed. The next step is to test the system extensively. This is expected to take several weeks.

Noise Measurements

Earlier this month, Windplan Groen also launched its own noise measurement campaign to get a better understanding of what and when local residents experience noise pollution from the wind turbines. The measurement campaign was initiated in response to reports submitted by local residents. In some places they experience the sounds of the new turbines as disturbing.

Three measuring stations have been placed. These stations have been selected on the basis of ‘hotspots’ of nuisance reports. The research, for the duration of three months, will be carried out by specialists from M+P. M+P’s measurement program is separate from the municipality’s noise measurements, which are being conducted by DGMR and Sensornet. Source: Windplan Groen

Windplan Groen is a large repowering project that comprises 90 new wind turbines, of which 86 will be realised in the first phase, spread over multiple wind farms. The total plan comprises around 500 MW of new installed capacity.
