Van Oord’s new vessel Boreas taking shape with all legs in place

Van Oord reached a milestone in the construction of its new offshore installation vessel Boreas with all four legs now installed.

The vessel is being built at the Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Ltd. shipyard in China. The legs each measure 123 metres in length. These giant legs allow the vessel to be jacked up and work in waters up to 70 metres deep.

The gigantic offshore installation vessel measures 175 metres in length and has a crane with a 155-metre-high boom, able to lift over 3,000 tonnes. It is purpose-built for the transport and installation of the next generation of 20 MW offshore wind turbines, with a height comparable to the Eiffel Tower. The vessel is capable of running on methanol.

Concurrent with the completion of the works on the legs, the vessel’s technical installations are being commissioned to make the vessel ready for jacking, crane, and sea trials. Thereafter, the Boreas will head to the Netherlands, Van Oord said on their socials.

Boreas’ first job will be for the 1.6 GW Nordseecluster offshore wind project in Germany. Van Oord won the contract for transporting and installing monopile foundations earlier this year. Source/Image: Van Oord
