Enexis scales up from 3 to 8 cable suppliers to enable major grid reinforcement

Dutch regional grid operator Enexis says it will install more than 76,000 kilometres of power cables over the next 12 years, as part of the reinforcement of the Dutch power grid. To make this possible, Enexis is scaling up from 3 to 8 cable suppliers.

Of the 76,000 kilometres of power cables, more than 40,000 kilometres of medium-voltage cables and more than 36,000 kilometres of low-voltage cables will be laid in Enexis’ service area ( provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Brabant and Limburg).

To enable the expansion operation, Enexis is scaling up from 3 to 8 cable suppliers. This is the outcome of a tender involving a total of EUR 2.3 billion.

Collaboration with 5 more cable suppliers

The three existing suppliers that continue to produce cables are Prysmian Netherlands, TKF (BV Twentsche Kabelfabriek) and Waskönig+Walter Kabel-Werk GmbH u. Co. KG.

Five suppliers are now added from the tender: TELE-FONIKA Kable S.A., NKT A/S, Hellenic Cables, KLZ Vertriebs GmbH – Kabel, Leitungen, Zubehör – Cables & more and GM products.

Circularity

Enexis says it wants to encourage circularity in the materials of cables and their production. An important focus is on the reduction of so-called ‘virgin materials’: materials that have never been processed or applied before. Source: Enexis
