Port of Amsterdam welcomes first solar floaters for installation in Hollandse Kust Noord OWF

Oceans of Energy celebrated a milestone in their offshore floating solar project last week when the first solar floaters arrived in the Port of Amsterdam. They will form part of the solar farm that will be installed in the Hollandse Kust Noord Offshore Wind Farm in 2025.

Oceans of Energy was contracted by CrossWind, owner of the Hollandse Kust Noord Offshore Wind Farm, last year to install and run the floating solar farm in the wind farm. The project will be the largest grid-connected offshore solar farm installed in the North Sea and the first-of-a-kind offshore solar with offshore wind (and offshore hydrogen) combination, the company said.

The modular, prefab units came straight from the Oceans of Energy factory. Last month, Ocean of Energy celebrated the start of the production of 200+ floaters that will make up the floating solar farm.

According to Oceans of Energy, the Port of Amsterdam is well suited to deploy the system. Earlier this year, the company demonstrated the assembly of the modular system in Belgium where the system proved to be fast and easy to assemble. It is a matter of only days to assemble a full offshore system from factory into the water. Installation offshore can be done with light spec vessels. Oceans of Energy is preparing for tow-out of 7MW batches through the sea sluice of IJmuiden.

The Oceans of Energy offshore solar farm has already proven itself to survive the frequent storms and rough conditions of the North Sea during 4-years of continuous operations in the North Sea, 12km offshore Scheveningen.

The project is supported by the European Commission, the Dutch Ministerie van Klimaat en Groene Groei and Ocean of Energy’s client Source: Oceans of Energy
