Van Oord today reported that its brand new offshore installation vessel Boreas has commenced with sea trials during excellent weather conditions.
For a period of about two and a half weeks, the performance of the vessel and all systems on board will be tested extensively on, for example, speed and turning and endurance. After the sea trials, the crane of the Boreas will be tested.
Boreas measures 175 metres in length and has a crane with a 155-metre-high boom, able to lift over 3,000 tonnes. It is purpose-built for the transport and installation of the next generation of 20 MW offshore wind turbines. The legs each measure 123 metres in length. These giant legs allow the vessel to be jacked up and work in waters up to 70 metres deep. The vessel is capable of running on methanol.
Boreas’ first job will be for the 1.6 GW Nordseecluster offshore wind project in Germany. Van Oord won the contract for transporting and installing monopile foundations earlier this year. Source/Image: Van Oord
