PowerNEST wind & solar rooftop energy system at municipal office in The Hague office opened

Last Friday, November 29 2024, IBIS Power’s PowerNEST modular wind and solar system on the rooftop of the municipal office at Fruitweg in The Hague was officially opened.

With the ceremonial commissioning of the PowerNEST modules, performed by alderman Robert Barker, the building is ‘ENG’: an Energy Neutral Building. This makes the 1950s building now a truly sustainable office with solar and wind energy. It is the first renovated energy-neutral government building in the Netherlands.

Modular rooftop energy system

PowerNEST is a modular rooftop system designed for buildings with greater energy needs than can be met by traditional local generation solutions. The innovative energy generation system combines wind turbines and (bi-facial) solar panels. The design takes full advantage of a physical principle to maximize power production, the venturi effect. Thus, the system generates large amounts of renewable energy throughout the year, both during the day and at night. The total amount of power produced by PowerNEST on the roof of the municipal building on Fruitweg is 91.5 MWh. The entire installation incl. the additional bifacial solar panels in The Hague generates 238 MWh of green power per year locally.

Municipality of The Hague as an example

Dick van Driel of IBIS Power: “The Municipality of The Hague has shown courage to make the building at Fruitweg more sustainable with innovative renewable energy solutions. It is the first building in The Hague with a PowerNEST and The Hague should be a bit proud of that. By doing so, the city of The Hague shows that it is investing in a sustainable future and sets a powerful example to other cities on how to be a leader in sustainability. We are seeing this movement starting all over the country now.”

The PowerNEST solution can already be found on several other buildings around the country, including the Eden District building in Rotterdam and Haasje Over in Eindhoven. Source: IBIS Power Image: Opening Powernest by alderman Robert Barker. Source: IBIS Power / Henriette Guest
