Van Oord awarded T&I contract for Fengmiao 1 OWF in Taiwan

Van Oord has received another offshore wind contract in Taiwan. This time, the company will be performing inter array cable installation work for the Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm in Taiwan. The work will start in 2027.

Under the contract, awarded by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), Van Oord is responsible for the transport, installation and burial of the 33 inter array cables, with a total length of approximately 64 kilometres. To carry out the work, Van Oord will deploy its dedicated cable-laying vessel Nexus on the project and use a remote-controlled trencher to bury the cables to the required depth below the seabed.

The Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm is located approximately 35 kilometres off the coast of Taichung in central Taiwan. When fully operational, the 500 MW wind farm will serve as a large scale and stable source of green electricity supplying Taiwanese businesses. The wind farm is owned by CIP through its fund Copenhagen Infrastructure IV (CI IV). CIP had been awarded the development of the wind farm in the first round of Taiwan’s Round 3 Zonal Development Offshore Wind Auction with grid connection in 2027.

Track record in Taiwan

Van Oord has already successfully installed inter-array cables and export cables at Taiwan’s Greater Changhua offshore wind farms. The Taiwanese government aims to install 5.7 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2025, with an additional 15 GW by 2035. Source: Van Oord
